Neuropsychological Assessments

Understanding How Your Brain Works

At Tidewater Neuropsychology, we believe in treating the whole person, not just the symptoms of a condition. Neuropsychological assessments provide a deeper understanding of how the brain functions and how it affects thinking, learning, memory, emotions, and behavior.

A neuropsychological evaluation uses specialized tests to measure different areas of cognitive functioning. Unlike imaging tools such as MRI or CT scans that show the structure of the brain, neuropsychological testing evaluates how well the brain is working in real-world situations.

You can think of it as taking your brain on a “test drive.” These assessments help identify strengths, pinpoint areas of difficulty, and guide personalized treatment recommendations.

What Is a Neuropsychological Assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to measure cognitive abilities, emotional functioning, and behavior. This includes an in-depth look at social-emotional functioning through self-report measures, as well as parent and teacher behavior rating scales and clinical behavioral observations. When appropriate, school-based observations may also be conducted to better understand how an individual functions in academic settings. The results help clinicians understand how brain function may be affected by medical conditions, injuries, developmental differences, or neurological disorders.

During testing, a licensed neuropsychologist evaluates areas such as:

  • Memory

  • Attention and concentration

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Language abilities

  • Processing speed

  • Executive functioning

  • Emotional and behavioral functioning

The specific tests included in your evaluation are carefully selected based on your symptoms, concerns, and referral questions from your physician or healthcare provider. These assessments can help with diagnosis, treatment planning, academic support, workplace accommodations, and medical care decisions.

Why Neuropsychological Testing Is Important?

Neuropsychological testing provides objective data about how the brain is functioning, which can help patients and healthcare providers make informed decisions about care.

Benefits of a neuropsychological evaluation include:

  • Clarifying diagnoses

  • Identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses

  • Guiding treatment plans

  • Supporting educational or workplace accommodations

  • Monitoring changes in cognitive functioning over time

  • Helping patients and families better understand symptoms

Because every brain is different, these assessments allow clinicians to develop individualized recommendations tailored to each patient’s needs.

What to Expect During an Evaluation

A neuropsychological evaluation typically includes several components:

  1. Clinical Interview: A discussion of medical history, symptoms, educational background, and daily functioning.

  2. Standardized Cognitive Testing: Paper-and-pencil or computer-based tasks that measure memory, attention, language, and reasoning.

  3. Behavioral and Emotional Assessments: Questionnaires that help evaluate mood, behavior, and psychological well-being.

  4. Results and Recommendations: After testing, the neuropsychologist prepares a detailed report explaining the findings and offering recommendations for treatment, therapies, academic supports, or lifestyle adjustments.
